If there were ever someone colorful enough to be recreated in hundreds of tiny squares of fabric, surely it would be Dolly Parton.

I recently came across an amazing quilt created by the team at Moda Fabrics for QuiltCon. Their inspiration apparently began with two things you wouldn't necessarily expect to hear in the same sentence: disco balls and Dolly Parton. From there came the idea for a pixelated portrait quilt—and the finished result is remarkable.

What fascinated me almost as much as the quilt itself was learning how they made it.

They began with a photograph of Dolly and converted the image into a pixel map. Just as a digital photograph is made from tiny pixels of color, a pixel quilt can be made from tiny squares of fabric. Different shades create the highlights and shadows that eventually allow an image to emerge.

For Dolly, the Moda team cut 1-inch fabric squares and arranged them according to their pixel grid. They used shades of pink for her face, yellow for her famous hair and blue for her shirt. And here's a detail I love: the sparkling black background incorporates all 354 colors in Moda's Bella Solids collection!

The little fabric squares were arranged on gridded fusible web before being sewn together. The project was initially laid out at an enormous 100" × 120", but all those tiny ¼-inch seams eventually reduced the finished quilt top to approximately 50" × 60".

And yes—it took a lot of sewing, pressing, patience and teamwork!

What I especially love about this project is that the basic idea isn't limited to Dolly. Moda explains how you can begin with a photograph of your own and turn it into a pixel map that becomes your guide for fabric placement.

Imagine the possibilities—a child or grandchild, a beloved pet, a wedding photograph, a favorite place, or perhaps someone you simply want to remember in fabric.

That's one of the things I love most about quilting. Fabric can become so much more than fabric. In the hands of a quilter, it can tell a story, preserve a memory and sometimes even become a portrait.
